Time for some math
1 June 2011Reaching the finals
16 June 2011One streak was broken in Ljubljana two weeks ago, but another one still lives and there will also not be a rare losing streak for the Vukovi. They conquered Budapest yet again with a 27-45 win over the Wolves.
The Wolves showed more offense in comparison to their 28-3 loss in Belgrade earlier in the year, but it was not enough as the Vukovi’s quarterback Vinnie Miroth carved up the home team with 4 passing touchdowns and a running score that iced the game. He had a great game in Ljubljana also, but it did not count as much, as the Vukovi lost that game.
Overall, he is currently the most convincing passer of the CEFL, with multiple touchdowns passing in every game of the season. In this one, he passed three times to Bratislav Bošnjak, including a pretty grab at the beginning of the second half, that put the score at 13-32 and made it clear it would be another Wolves loss.
Kicker Milan Matović missed the go-ahead extra point in Ljubljana – it could be that this was the reason why the Vukovi attempted only one extra point in this game. Nevertheless they opened the scoring with a touchdown pass to Brandon McDowell. The two point conversion failed, but it would not be the only one, as they successfully converted just one. The Wolves did not fair much better, having their extra points blocked twice.
The Wolves took their first and only lead of the game with a pass from Vasyl Yordan to Krisztian Piros, but they soon lost it on a touchdown run from McDowell, and soon it was 6-20, on the first of three Miroth-Bošnjak connections. They did reduce to 13-20 on a Peter Cseperkalo run in the second quarter, but the Vukovi again scored three unanswered touchdowns, including a interception returned touchdown by Luka Strahinović to make it 13-38. At that point, the outcome was already clear – the Wolves managed two more scores but it was not nearly enough and the Vukovi added one more of their own. Miroth led the team to the end zone with his passing and finished it off himself with a run.
The Vukovi so, with their third win, became the first team to secure a spot in the finals. It’s a long shot they will lose the last two games against the Cavaliers, but even if they do, only the Wolves or the Silverhawks can get to four wins. For the other, the maximum is three and the Vukovi hold tiebreakers over both.
