Battle of the imports
20 May 2011Time for some math
1 June 2011The game between the Silverhawks and the Vukovi lived up to the expectations, as the Silverhawks won 49-42 on a last minute touchdown by the new Slovenian hero, running back Joseph Moncur.
Moncur has earned this honor not only for his game winning score, but for his overall performance that helped his team get the first win over the Belgrade Vukovi. The Vukovi beat the Silverhawks nine straight times since the league play began and also the Silverhawks are the first team to beat the Vukovi since 2009 and the Cineplexx Blue Devils, a streak of 12 straight.
They did it a dramatic way, although it looked like a dream game for three quarters for the home team. The scoring went back and forth during the first quarter, with the Vukovi taking the lead twice, once on a 50 yard reception by Bratislav Bošnjak; Moncur answered right back with a 40 yard run, but Brandon McDowell put the Vukovi back on top with a 35 yard run. Then, Jernej Pavlič sparked the Silverhawks with a kickoff return for a touchdown to tie the score and the Silverhawks almost never looked back.
Almost.
Moncur scored three more times in the first half and Rok Štamcar added another one in the second half. At 42-14 it looked over, but for whatever reason, the Silverhawks suddenly disappeared. Aleksandar Lazović caught one, and with a 2-point conversion it was 49-22; quarterback Vinnie Miroth passed to Filip Stojanović for his third touchdown pass at the beginning of the fourth giving his team hope.
The dream officially turned nightmare for the Silverhawks when Stojanović got another one with less than 6 minutes to go, reducing it to just 6. Only minutes later, Pavle Plamenac caught a 40 yard touchdown pass from Miroth, tying the game. Vinnie Miroth was briefly the new hero, but only for short as the extra point was unsuccessful in this wild game.
Still, the game was live, but in the last moments, the Silverhawks seized the opportunity and got the ball on the 5 yard line. There, it was Moncur time, who gave them this huge win with his fifth and final touchdown. The Vukovi had the last chance but the man who started the scoring, Bratislav Bošnjak, dropped a last-ditch pass in the end zone.
After all, it was only fair for the Silverhawks to get the win. They got closer and closer to the Vukovi as time went by, improving year by year, until finally getting it. Coach of the Silverhawks, Uroš Valant, was naturally excited about it.
“This was without a doubt the best Silverhawks game of all time. Bo Moncur is a great hero, but I also need to commend [linebacker] Desmond Hendricks who totally killed the Vukovi’s game plan”, said Valant.
Despite the loss, the Vukovi stay in first place. They beat the Silverhawks by 12 points in the first game. Both teams have two wins and a loss.
