19 April 2024CEFL Championship 2024 Round 1 Recap: Guelfi Firenze – Belgrade SBB Vukovi
23 April 2024The Swiss and the Danish champion squared off in the first round when Calanda Broncos hosted the Copenhagen Towers. A thing to note was that both teams’ starting quarterbacks are homegrown players, which seems to be a growing trend among teams in the CEFL Championship. The Broncos have galloped beyond the reach in the first half while the second was a more equal affair.

The visitors had the ball on the opening drive of the game. It wasn’t long before Matthias Tanno notched an interception. Broncos’ offensive leader Robin Sennrich rushed on a quarterback keeper to put the first points up on the scoreboard, 7-0.
Anton Leonard Witmeur broke free on the next Towers’ drive, drawing his team near, but their offense ultimately stalled and Jakob Niemann Green booted it through the uprights for 7-3.
On the following drive Sennrich lobbed the ball deep downfield to Selome Adzayi, who escaped his defenders and upped the score to 13-3.
Short passes and rushing bursts brought the Broncos a hairsbreadth from the goal line, enough for Maxwell Gray to scamper in for 19-3.
A short punt by the Towers put the home team on the opposing 24 yard line. Then a pitch-and-catch by Sennrich and Gray extended the Broncos’ lead to the halftime score of 26-3.
In the second half Witmeur and Noah Helmi’s rushes kept the Towers’ drive firing on all cylinders. Finally, Alexander Kronborg Bjerre located Lasse Baltzer Sommerlund in the back of the end zone for their first and only touchdown of the game, 26-10.
The Broncos raised their lead to what ended up being the final tally. On the same scoring play from the first half, Gray outran the defense to stop the clock at 33-10.
The Towers never let up, but they couldn’t materialize their offensive efforts. It was only Broncos’ Tanno who managed to strip the ball from one of their receivers, and fall on it marking a fumble recovery.
The second round is scheduled to take place on 11 May. The Swiss will travel to challenge Parma Panthers and the winner will advance to play in the semifinals of the CEFL Championship.
