Clash of the Titans
8 April 2016An exciting game was seen on Saturday between the Sarajevo Spartans and Kranj Alp Devils. The Slovenians have jumped out to an early lead in the first half, but after trailing 20-6, the Spartans fought back to tie the game 20-20 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter the Alp Devils dominated, scoring two unanswered touchdowns to finish the game. The Spartans attempted to come back and score, but they wound up on the one-yard line as time expired. Alp Devils start their season with a 34-20 victory, while the Spartans look for ways to improve.
Second game of the opening week ended much the same. In their first international home game, the Domžale Tigers faced Zagreb Patriots. In front of a crowd of 500 spectators the mayor of the hosting town handled the coin toss ceremony.
Tigers’ offense was churning from the start, with their first play from scrimmage for 12 yards by the running back Klemen Svetlin, but followed with a 3&out and a bad punt that was recovered in the home team’s end zone by the Patriots, for their first lead. Croatian team’s offense kept on going sprung by their American running back, John Holloway, who scored another touchdown in the following drive. Although dominating both sides of the ball in the first quarter, Patriots’ kicking game lacked luster, as both of their PATs were unsuccessful, leaving them with a 12 point lead.
Loud cheering inspired the Tigers to score their first touchdown by Svetlin’s run for almost 60 yards. The PAT by Matej Koletnik was good. Before the end of the half, the Patriots completed some good passes, ending with a touchdown catch by Viktor Kleščič and a halftime score of 7-19.
The second half was looking more promising for the Tigers, who found themselves in the red zone twice and stepped up in the defense to make some good plays, including a sack in the end zone that resulted in a safety. However, both Tigers’ red zone trips ended with interceptions. The Patriots managed to score after both turnovers, successfully bringing the game to its final result, 9-32.
