Battle of the imports
20 May 2011Silverhawks and Cavaliers played on a shiny Istanbul day for the first CEFL game ever played in the city on the bosphorus. The Cavaliers supporters were expecting their team to challenge the visitors but without having the difference makers, it did not happen.
Silverhawks dominated the game with their spectacular new signing, running back Joseph Moncur, and tackle machine, linebacker Desmond Hendriks. Quarterback Vincent Gay was also pretty successful for the overall coordination and with long passes when needed. Quarterback of the home team, Güçhan Özbilgin, was the only player from the Istanbul team who put up some resistance against the visitors.
In the first play of the game Vincent Gay thew a long pass and Moncur finished the drive with a rushing play and the touchdown. The first quarter ended with 0-7. But it became worse in the second quarter started with an injury, when Cavaliers receiver Şafak Yiğitoğlu broke his leg. The demoralized home team lost his concentration and made easy mistakes. Moncur broke four tackles in one play and scored the second touchdown for the away team. The last minutes of the 2nd quarter were a disaster for the home team as the Silverhawks scored after a mistake on a punt play and another one after a steal from the Cavaliers ball carrier, Saygun Ofluoğlu. As the half ended with 0-28 score it was clear the Cavaliers would have to wait a bit more for their first CEFL win.
Still, in the second half the Cavaliers performed better, but it would not be enough for a comeback. Quarter Back Özbilgin gained many rushing yards and scored 2 touchdowns. But both were answered by the Slovenian team – the game ended with the final score of 14-42.
At the end, it was a clear picture for the Cavaliers that they will definitely need new imports to replace their former running back Desmond Mays. For the Silverhawks, the play was promising before their big game on the upcoming weekend against their Serbian rival Vukovi.
