Win for Belgrade
21 September 2009
All set for playoffs
28 September 2009Two Serbian teams travel to away games for a showdown with their Austrian rivals, in two games that will decide everything that is still in doubt. First up, the Gladiators and the Dukes will decide the second playoff team in the North, while the Blue Devils will try to retake the number one spot in the South from the Vukovi, and secure a home playoff semifinal.
A poor season for both teams, both the Gladiators and the Dukes, can still end in success, as a win for either will guarantee a playoff spot and a semifinal appearance. The Gladiators, though only 2-5 survived last week when the Wolves beat the Cowboys – if the Gladiators manage a win, they would end up on top, since they hold the best record in games against these teams.
If they’re up to the task is questionable, considering their situation this fall – two convincing losses that don’t guarantee them a good chance. On the other hand, they played a very good Slovenian team that also beat the Dukes this month. The Dukes are in slightly better, but similar shape as the Gladiators, and the fact that it’s an away game for the Serbian team, is the best hope the champions from Austria have at the moment. If they still have any motives left.
A day later, teams that plowed through their opposition this year meet for a rematch in Hohenems. The Vukovi, 7-0 this season in the CEFL, will play the Blue Devils, currently 6-1.
Neither the Vukovi nor the Blue Devils face elimination – no, this game, a rematch of the best game of the spring, a 49-48 overtime win for the Vukovi, will decide which team gets a home playoff game in the semifinal. And perhaps some bragging rights before the final, as both will be heavy favorites in the semis, regardless if they’ll play at home or not.
The playoffs will we played two weeks after the end of the regular season.
