In the spotlight
10 September 2009When the Silverhawks signed running back Bo Moncur for the fall season of the league, their plan was clear – make it to the league playoffs for the first time ever. The first game of the fall was to decide if the plan was realistic or not, and after the 0-39 trumping of the Gladiators in Austria it’s safe to say it is.
The 2008 champs never stood a chance, going down 0-13 in the first quarter on Moncur’s touchdown runs. The Gladiators, who will play out the fall with a depleted roster, had nowhere near enough to answer, in the end failing to score for the remainder of the game.
The Silverhawks had no such problems – Moncur’s acquisition proved to be enough to allow other players to step up and Rok Štamcar scored an additional three times. After a field goal and a safety, Štamcar’s return put the score at 0-25 at halftime. The Slovenians would score twice more in the third quarter for the final score of 0-39.
The Hawks are in a great position at the moment – being 3-3 and in a tie with the Dukes for the best record in the group. The two teams meet this weekend trying to decide which will almost surely secure a playoff berth, while the Cowboys lurk with a 3-4 record and the Gladiators themselves not completely out. They are however on the brink of elimination, being forced to rely on other teams to secure their chances continue to live.
