CEFL Championship 2026 Round 1 Recap: Bristol Aztecs – Belfast Trojans
29 April 2026CEFL Championship 2026 opening game was a wild ride of momentum swings. Kragujevac Wild Boars hosted the game expecting a rout; instead they witnessed a tug-of-war. The home team looked every bit the early favorite, jumping to a two-score lead in the dominant first quarter that showcased both an agile defense and a quick-strike offense. Belgrade Blue Dragons answered in the second quarter knotting the game at halftime after a pair of prolific drives.
The third period felt like a reset: the Wild Boars grabbed a brief lead again with a touchdown that reclaimed momentum and suggested the early script might hold. Surprisingly, the home team’s initial efficiency fizzled by the end, while the Belgraders’ caught second wind producing a late-game barrage in the final minutes. The Blue Dragons’ fourth-quarter eruption, a 21-point outburst, turned a one score gap into a decisive victory when it mattered most.
The home team’s first score came from a turnover. The game barely started when their defense stripped the ball from running back Željko Kostić in the rival’s maroon zone. Bogdan Đorđević rushed the ball to the 12 yard line and a couple of charges by Isaiah Green were enough for the first points, 7-0.
After the Wild Boars’ defense stopped the visiting team on a turnover of downs, Green took over again, first hitting Stefan Đurić in stride for a long gain. Next, he scrambled right to avoid a blitzing defender, shed 4 tacklers and pushed all the way through to the end zone for 14-0.
In the second quarter, the Blue Dragons broke free from the rivaling defense’s stranglehold: Michael Cornwell and Varsey Bright’s scampers ended up ahead of the chains. Finally, Cornwell lobbed the ball to the goal area to tight end Igor Rokvić, 14-7.
Then, a long-distance pass from Green to a lonesome Đurić was negated by an overhead snap that nearly ended up as a safety. Blue Dragon’s DB Bright defended Green’s pass to Šundović, handing the ball back to his offensive teammates late in the second quarter.
The visitors’ strategic use of time outs extended what little time they had before the HT whistle. Cornwell and Bright repeatedly moved the chains over the ground. As the first half wound down Cornwell finally found a hole in the middle for a quick run to balance the scoreboard at 14-14.
A long and promising push by the Blue Dragons knocked firmly on the neighbors’ door in the third period. It ended by Cornwell zipping the ball on a crossing route, but only to an expecting defender, Trifun Bigić. When the Wild Boars took over, a swing route highlighted a rumbling tail back John Rincon, who escaped defenders and broke tackles for big yards after catch. Green threaded the needle and Đurić did the rest of the work for 21–14.
In the final quarter the home team’s defense lost steam. Cornwell and Bright had little trouble weaving their way though and the Blue Dragons’ quarterback crossed the goal line for 21-20.
Now their defense gelled too. Having another go at the ball, Cornwell moved the chains over the ground and then located Elijah Smoot, who escaped his defender on a post route, 21-28.
The Wild Boars treid responding over the air, but Mihailo Đokić caughed up the ball on a gang tackle and a defending Cornwell snatched it up before it went out of bounds. With 3:34 still to play the score was still active, but that quickly changed after Cornwell’s punishing run to the red zone. He put the last points on the board going to Bright for the final score 21-35.
There were not a lot of times that the Blue Dragons were victorious playing the Wild Boars over the years. This rare win will take them to Florence next, where the Guelfi will put them to the test in the second round game, which is scheduled for 16 May.
