Fight for the finals
29 May 2014
Sunday’s resolution
19 June 2014Belgrade brawl between SBB Vukovi and Ljubljana Silverhawks went to the Serbian team who all but secure their bowl game appearance with Shaun Rutherford’s 5 touchdowns.
SBB Vukovi had a slow start in both offense and defense and they managed to score only through special team in the first quarter with a punt returned for a touchdown by Tony Washington. After that Silverhawks took the initiative scoring a safety and a touchdown with a pass by Kenric McNeal to Matic Tomše who continued with great play after scoring twice last week. That brought the score at the end of first period to Silverhawks favor, 7:8.
It was in second quarter that SBB Vukovi caught up and never let go. Touchdowns were adding up, first by Shaun Rutherford’s pass to Marko Marić, then another Washington’s punt return and two more rushing by Rutherford. The Silverhawks were in a deep hole by half time, 35:8.
Knowing that they need a win by at least 14 points difference, SBB Vukovi didn’t let go in the second half either. After another touchdown pass from Rutherford to Marić which increased their lead to 34 points, they started favoring running game to bleed the clock. Their ground attack was stifled by the Silverhawks though who got back on track with two touchdown passes from McNeal to Aleš Zakšek and Bojan Justin. Then Rutherford and Washington, a dynamic duo which scored all the points for SBB Vukovi, put a final touch to the game connecting for one passing touchdown to end the game 48:20.
In week 9 SBB Vukovi will play their final game in Budapest against the Docler Wolves. However, much more interesting matchup will be the one in Kragujevac, where the Wild Boars play the Silverhawks for a place in the finals. If SBB Vukovi return victorious from Budapest, the Silverhawks will need a win by more than 19 points difference in Kragujevac and a win against Docler Wolves in the closing week for a spot in the bowl game.
