Finally!
15 September 2008
Same time, same place
21 September 2008This week’s schedule features three games, two of which could be decisive when it comes to conference winners. Technically though, only one of those games will be played this week, as the Vukovi’s home game against the Dukes has been scheduled for Monday.
In the game on Saturday, the CNC Gladiators return to the BVSC Stadium in Budapest, a year since they last faced the Wolves there and lost. It could be a different story this year after the game, but right now it already is, as the Gladiators will make their trip with a chance to win and finally clinch first place in the North conference.
The way they started the season, the Wolves are lucky to still be in the hunt, but this is the game where it could all end. If they do in fact win, their chances remain slim — the Gladiators await the Silverhawks in the final week and it’s hard to see them losing first place with a loss against a, currently, 2-win team.
A lot could fall on on the canceled game between the Gladiators and the Dukes, but as the win is likely to be awarded to the Gladiators, the Austrian team is currently a win away from clinching the conference. The game will be played from 4PM.
Still, though the first placed team plays a home game in the league semi-final, the final standings might not matter that much. The Wolves are eyeing the league trophy again, and with the playoffs being a new season altogether, a poor start will be easily forgotten if they play well in the semifinal.
The next day, a less interesting game will be played in Ljubljana when the Silverhawks host the Cowboys. If there was any betting on CEFL, the logical pick would be under for total points scored, as Ljubljana has proven to be a tough team to score points on at home — for most teams at least. The biggest problem for the Silverhawks has been that similarly they struggled to score themselves, but last week was the week that they finally scored more than their opponent.
After six straight defeats, they beat the Monarchs 6-0, and they could make it two against the streaky Cowboys. The Cowboys lost both games this fall, after they had previously won three in a row, and lost three to begin the season. What is clear is that there are some teams they can beat, and some they can’t — the Silverhawks fit in the group of teams they can beat. Thus, though it doesn’t mean anything when it comes to the standings, it should be a tough close game in Medvode on Sunday. The game starts on 2PM.
