Gladiators come through
22 September 2008Exactly one year to date since their last game in Belgrade, the Vukovi and the Novi Sad Dukes will meet when football returns to Belgrade, in what should again be the deciding game of the South conference.
As they did this season, the Vukovi lost the spring season game in Novi Sad in 2007. Then, on the 22nd of September, they beat the Dukes to pass by them in the standings at that time, and at the end of the season. Though the title was won in the playoffs, it turned out to be probably the most important game of the regular season for both teams; with first place, the Vukovi beat the Gladiators at home and the Dukes lost in Budapest.
On Monday, again on the 22nd of September, the Dukes have another shot to keep what they had worked hard at to achieve since the spring. They haven’t lost any games on the field, but with the canceled game in Austria, they have a loss to their record. Still on top of the conference, thanks to the win in the head to head match against Belgrade, they are in the exact same situation as they were a year ago.
With the history between them, the Vukovi are probably more comfortable awaiting Monday then the Dukes are. Though the Dukes’ backup quarterback, Rastko Jokić, didn’t play all that bad last year, his team was still shutout, in what was the lowest scoring game of the last three seasons.
After yesterdays win, the Gladiators finally overcame the Wolves this season, and so maybe can the Dukes. If so, the teams that lost in last year’s semifinal, the Dukes and the Gladiators, would have a rematch — this time, on their field.
The game starts from 8PM.
