15 June 2008Team founders leave the Vukovi
17 June 2008Of the three remaining games, likely the most interesting one, the one between the Vukovi and the Gladiators, has been postponed and moved for the second, or the fall, part of the season.
With the game between the number two team in the South, Vukovi, and the number one team in the North, Gladiators, not being played in two weeks, CEFL’s spring season will end prematurely this weekend, with two games.
The Gladiators officially requested a postponement, with the reason being that many of their players are currently tied up volunteering for the Euro 2008, that’s being held in Austria and Switzerland, and wouldn’t be able to make the trip. Even without that, they have one of the smallest away game rosters, so there wasn’t much sense in playing the game.
The move is undoubtedly to the Vukovi’s detriment; the Gladiators will again have a stronger team for the fall season, continuing last year’s trend of acquiring players from other Austrian teams. Their biggest addition for last year was receiver Joe Widner, and for this year they are in talks with even some Austrian national team members. Their deal with receiver Christian Steffani of the Cineplexx Blue Devils appeared to be a done deal, but is still uncertain.
The exact date will be set later, although the fall season is already packed with games, including two four game weekends in four September weeks, when the season will close out. The Vukovi won’t play in the opening week on September the 6th, but the Gladiators will play in all four weeks of league play, so bigger schedule changes are likely, if the game is to be played at all.
Semifinals are set for October 11th, so teams could have a two week break when the regular season concludes on September 27th. With that in mind, it’s more probable that the fall season will start a week earlier, as both teams are expected to be in the playoffs.
