CEFL welcomes Patriots
5 October 2011
A new Silverhawk
9 December 2011The four time CEFL champions from Belgrade will attempt to win their fifth — and fourth straight — trophy this upcoming season, and they’ll do it with a new coach – Sean Embree, currently an assistant coach at the University of Colorado.
“I’m honored and excited to be chosen to lead this great football team. It will be great to work along side Reuben Droughns who has already done a phenomenal job for the Vukovi. My passion and competitiveness runs deep for the game of football, and my hopes are to instill those same characteristics in the team. I look forward to embracing the Serbian culture and being a part of something special”, said Embree.
The 41-year old Embree will be the team’s sixth head coach and is likely the one with the most impressive resume. He is currently an assistant coach for the University of Colorado Buffaloes, members of the Pacific-12 NCAA conference, where he plans to continue working after the football season is over. In his career, he was also an assistant coach for the Denver Broncos under the current Washington Redskins head coach, Mike Shanahan, who is his coaching mentor. As a player, he won three Big 12 titles and National Championship as a member of the Colorado University. His brother Jon is the current head coach of the Buffaloes and his family has deep football roots, since his father also played in the NFL for many years.
It was the Bronco-connection that helped bring Embree to Belgrade, as the Vukovi’s head coach last year, Reuben Droughns played for the Broncos at the same time Embree was coaching. Although he managed to win both the CEFL and the Serbian league last year, Droughns will return to the assistant role he had with the team in 2010. He was an emergency option last year and expressed his desire to continue working under a more experienced head coach.
“We are happy we managed to bring another big american football name, that wants to help develop not only the Vukovi but also the whole sport in Serbia. This helps bring us closer to our goal and that is to get as many foreign coaches as we can, to develop our players and to improve their chances of attending a college in the US, foremost the University of Colorado, with which we established a close relationship”, said Nisavic.
