Playoff weekend
13 May 2009
A mild obstacle
19 May 2009The Budapest Wolves saved their season with a win in Novi Sad, but it won’t mean much unless they continue their winning streak on Sunday against the Vukovi. If the Cowboys’ home game the day before is almost like a playoff game, this one surely is for the Wolves, as they host the Vukovi in a can’t lose contest.
The odds are stacked against them, as they not only must win the game, but do it so to overcome a 10-point loss in Belgrade, to secure themselves in case tiebreakers scenarios come into play, which can very easily happen. On top of everything, they host a team that’s 5-0 against them all time and 4-0 this season.
“I know that we are 0 and 5 against them, but none of our games were blow-outs. We should have won our first game, but we made a lot of mistakes. We eliminate those and we will be in good shape“, says Csanad Kiraly, the Wolves’ leading receiver after four games this season.
After starting 0-2, they won two games in a row, so they can’t hope for a better time to play a game this important. Though their big win in Zagreb wasn’t surprising, it still cameafter much struggle in the first half, and the Novi Sad win, despite all its importance, didn’t come until the final minutes of the game. They say they could’ve closed it out sooner, but the truth is, they didn’t.
“Against Zagreb, the first half was a little bit shaky, but we outscored the opponent in the second half. Against Novi Sad we had more than 300 yards rushing, but we struggled scoring. It is something we need to work on, but I think it will be alright! Our defense really came together, no offensive touchdowns in the last two games. Hopefully it will carry on to the Belgrade game.“
“Our group is really tough with Vukovi and Blue Devils. We need to win out all our games so every game is the most important for us from now on. But our confidence is back with the latest win over Novi Sad.“
It’s not all bleak though — on the flip side, with a win they’d put themselves in a great position to make the playoffs. Because in the end, it comes down to a simple question: is any of these teams good enough to beat the Blue Devils at least once? The Wolves already tried and failed, and the Vukovi can still believe they can, since they haven’t played them this season. If not, this game, Sunday from 5PM in Budapest, decides everything.
