Glads win the final game
29 September 2008After six months of play, CEFL has reached the final week of the regular season. The four games on schedule lack suspense, since all the playoff teams have already been determined, but still, some of the teams have good reasons to play out the season in good spirit.
When it comes to good spirit — other than the top teams in the group, which won and clinched the top seed last week — it doesn’t get any better than in Ljubljana, where the Silverhawks have just recorded their third win of the season, the highest number of wins since they began playing in the CEFL. The two straight shutouts of third ranked teams in their respective conferences, and in back to back weeks, changed the outlook of a season in which some narrow defeats made it resemble the two prior ones a little too much.
One of those was the tough 13-6 overtime loss to the Gladiators in April, and on Saturday from 2PM, they have a chance to see how far they got this season against the top team of their conference. Last year they had a small chance to make it to the playoffs if they won in Austria, but were expectedly blown out — this year, the game is meaningless, but the Silverhawks have maybe even more to gain.
Another team that knows tough losses is Zagreb, and the last game of the season is also their last chance to win a game. In 2007, a former CEFL team, the Wild Boars, finished the season winless, and the Thunder are on their way to do the same, even with the increased number of games.
They play in Novi Sad this week, on Petrovaradin stadium, Saturday from 3PM, against a team perhaps in an even tougher position. The Dukes may be in the playoffs, but have just lost a game they needed to win, and are preparing to travel to Austria to play in the semifinal. This game in Novi Sad could be their last home game of the season, and they’re in a tough spot, for a team that had big plans at the end of the spring season.
Having already clinched the South, even a loss wouldn’t mean much to the Vukovi, who travel to Budapest for the second time this season — they play the Cowboys in the final round.
The final playoff team, the Budapest Wolves, goes to Bratislava to play the Monarchs. Perhaps they would lack the motive anyway, since it’s not likely that the Gladiators will lose to the Silverhawks, but as it stands now, after the somewhat stunning loss to the undermanned Austrians last week, even a theoretical chance of winning first place is gone.
The Cowboys host the Vukovi at Sportmax Center in Budapest, Saturday from 3PM, while the Monarchs and the Wolves play at the usual place: Nobelova 14 in Bratislava, also Saturday, starting from 2PM.
