Number one
12 October 2007Belgrade joins Budapest
15 October 2007Though as many said after the game a sloppy game, the Wolves – Dukes matchup was a game worthy of the SELAF semifinal. Novi Sad came close, but the Wolves were just a little bit better, getting a thrilling overtime win and using the return of Vasyl Yordan the best way possible. He played only in the second half, but just enough to get his team back on track after a strange first half.
Perhaps too nervous from not playing in a while, Čaba Juhas turned the ball over three times on the first three possesions – of those Budapest took advantage of only the first when Peter Cseperkalo walked in from the two yard line.
For the rest, they couldn’t do anything, as the Novi Sad Dukes changed their defensive scheme, going with four down lineman and crowding the box with eight guys intent on stopping Cseperkalo and the Wolves running game. For whatever reason the offense wasn’t working with Attila Lendvai and despite the turnover differential they were only up by 7.
But then Juhas got a hot hand, and was helped immensly by Boris Kuzmanović who had the most impressive game of his career and maybe even in SELAF history, reducing the score to 7-6 on a 55 yard catch. Juhas completed another pass this time to Sinisa Bilić for the 14-7 lead.
Both teams were slightly let down by thier main players – though Juhas carved up the Wolves’ defense he also commited his fourth turnovers, this one especially damaging – Dukes were deep in the Wolves’ half and leading 14-7 when Matyas Hubay intercepted Juhas, completely changing the course of the game.
Especially because Vasyl Yordan was warming up at the very same time. Once he got in, the Wolves started rolling, running more effectively and finally being able to complete passes against heavy pressure from Dukes’ defense. On the first drive he completed a touchdown pass to Krisztian Piros, the same combination that brough doom to Novi Sad in the first game between these teams.
But in the fourth quarter both teams seemed like they were trying to lose. Peter Cseperkalo fumbled, as did Yordan on the snap. Dukes stalled, and Juhas even got injured after a hard hit by Csaba Peter. Yordan completed an unbeliavable tipped pass to Balint Michaletzky, leading to a 45 yard field goal attempt by Gabor Sviatko. Sviatko had wished for a shot at a game winner before the game, but his kick went wide left and the game eventually went into overtime, the first such game in two years of SELAF.
The Wolves’ attempt went for a 25 yard touchdown to Csanad Kiraly and Juhas comitted his fifth turnover of the game, fumbling the ball and clinching the Wolves’ trip to the finals.
„Defense played good, and they also played good after our fumbles. We made a lot of mistakes and we were a little lucky“, modest was Yordan after the game. „The touchdown that tied it, we got lucky, I threw the ball just as I was getting hit.“
