May the best team win
19 October 2009
Champs again
24 October 2009Last year was the first time one team’s player picked up all the awards. This year, things are more in order, as both finalists’ players picked up one, and they’ll go almost head to head on Saturday. The Blue Devils’ quarterback Bradley Guidry has been voted the best Offensive Player for 2009, while the award for accomplishments on the defensive side of the ball goes to the Vukovi’s defensive lineman Miloš Lišanin.
Guidry was in a league of his own this year, passing for 23 touchdowns and just 1 interception. He almost became the single season record holder for passing yards in a season, but his new record for passing touchdowns will likely stay as the best, or one of the best, for a while. He received 4 votes from opposing players coaches and media following CEFL. Behind him was Jordan Green, the Vukovi’s quarterback, and last year’s recipient with 2.
The Vukovi’s Lišanin is a fast riser, as he became a Vukovi member just last year. He didn’t hold anything back this year, leading the league and his team in tackles, sacks, tackles for loss and forced fumbles. He is also the first player in CEFL history to record a double digit sack number, getting 11. Not counting the playoffs, he has 39.5 tackles, 13.5 for loss, 11 sacks and 3 forced fumbles. His performance was such that there was no doubt he would receive the award, getting 5 votes; no other player received more than one.
This is obviously the first such award for the Blue Devils; it’s the Vukovi’s fourth and second straight on defense.
Guidry will attempt to be the first Offensive Player of the Year to also add a bowl win to his accomplishments for the same year. All the previous winners were on teams that lost the final: Andrej Tasić and the Vukovi in 2006, Peter Cseperkalo and the Wolves in 2007 and Jordan Green with the Vukovi last year.
On the other hand, the Vukovi will attempt to break a curse of their own, as the only CEFL championship they have is from 2007, when their players did not win any regular season award.
