18 November 2006The Kragujevac Wild Boars defeated the Belgrade Vukovi in the SELAF Final and won the title for the 2006 season. In front of a packed FK Radnički Stadium in Belgrade, Kragujevac, similar to the last game these teams played jumped out to an early lead that they never let go.
Turnovers were decisive this time as well, as the Vukovi had five, and the Wild Boars just one throughout the game.
This time though, the Vukovi started making plays late in the first half and gave a good game to about four thousand spectators in the stands, but Kragujevac made key plays at the right time forcing the Vukovi to play behind constantly. In that situation, the Boars knew how to take advantage of their turnovers and burn time off the clock.
They went hard after the inexperienced quarterback, crossing the line of scrimmage many times before the snap in the process, and giving the Vukovi plenty of penalty yards. But in the end it was succesful, as Nemanja Petković was intercepted four times, with the second and third coming in the 4th quarter inside the Boars 40 yars line. Before the game was over, Petković threw the ball to Marko Obradović once more, when his team was already desperatly trying to score. Obradović was outstanding in his last match, getting two interceptions and plenty of tackles, so he added the Final MVP award to this year`s prize collection.
Three quick scores by the Wild Boars in the first quarter started when Lazar Nikolić fumbled the ball on the very first play, which the Boars used to score their first three points. On the Vukovi’s next possession, Petković’s pass was just tipped by Nikola Ralenac and went right to the hands of Marko Košutić who made it 10-0 after returning the interception for a touchdown. Their last touchdown of the first quarter when Nemanja Trajković found Žarko Đorđević in the end zone for a 16-0 lead after the extra point was blocked.
The Vukovi were able to start something in the second quarter. After a series of first downs, Petković passed to Pavle Tasić who ran the remaining 50 yards for a score. But a disastrous lapse in the Vukovi’s defense, on less than half a minute in the first half, resulted in a touchdown by Ognjen Nikolić who ran 56 yards to the end zone, with great blocking from his teammates.
In the second half, the Vukovi had good field position, after their second touchdown, scored by after an 8 yard run. Golušin gave the team a boost, and Petković had several good passes on that drive. But later on their drives ended on the Boars half after turnovers. Their last chance was after a fumble by Nemanja Trajković on Kragujevac’s territory, but Petković was just intercepted once more.
Final MVP, Marko Obradović said after the game that even though he plans to retire from playing , he will remain with the team. „The first half was easier than we expected. Both offense and defense showed a level of play that was higher than anything they had shown previosly. We had a difficult time in the second half, but that was mostly because we were trying to burn time of the clock“, he said. Head coach Vujica Samailović thinks his team was near perfect. „We felt a little bad after the fumble, which gave the Vukovi possession on our half, but other than that, everything was great“, said Samailović.
„Without Andrej, our first quarterback we couldn’t have done better”, said Pavle Tasić from the Vukovi. „That first fumble maybe shouldn’t have happened, but the interceptions were maybe sort of a necessity. We’ll be preparing for the next year with our first quarterback, and hopefully it’s going to be better. I think the League fulfilled my expectations, especially because of great attendance throughout the season.”
“We made mistakes early on, had two, three mistakes they took advantage off. I think the game was decided early on, later it was just routine for the Boars, who are an experienced team” said the Vukovi’s Coach Igor Hoffmann.
League play will resume next season, but until then, the Kragujevac Wild Boars are the champions.
