Serbian CEFL teams to play for their domestic championship
18 July 2009Silverhawks add one, but huge, piece
1 September 2009That the North conference would end up being such a mess was hard to predict, but as the CEFL is about to begin the second part of the season, all four teams have a reasonable chance of advancing to the playoff stage. Not that it means all four teams are playing well this season, as the group as a whole has been dominated by teams from the other conference and currently no team has a winning record, but with the South already decided, at least there’s something to look out for before the playoffs start.
The game between the Gladiators and the Silverhawks will likely eliminate the losing team – as both are 2-3 and a climb back to contention would be much more difficult for either team.
The defending champs and the visiting Slovenian team are moving in different directions. Though both could’ve had a better start to the season, the Gladiators are in very poor shape with quarterback and the face of team Bernhard Kamber retiring from football because of personal reasons. Not only that, but some of the other important players are either out or questionable, giving the team with a generally small roster huge problems.
The Silverhawks on the other hand are for the first time in genuine contention in the fall. They’ve managed to recover from an 0-3 start winning two games in a row, and with three games left on their schedule, they’re in control of their fate with all the games against their main rivals.
They’ve prepared well, as best as they could have, signing an import player for the first time. Bo Moncour, running back who played for the St. Polten Invaders in Austria this spring will be the key player for the Silverhawks – and if all goes well, they have a very reasonable chance of making it to the playoffs.
All will be decided in just three weeks, since the Hawks play all their games in consecutive wins. Will it be an avalanche that will sweep their competition, or another flop remains to be seen, but it’s the best chance they’ve had in four years.
